The 1891 season produced 1,109 games between 17 clubs, running from April 8, 1891 to October 6, 1891. Those games ended in 154 different final scores, 38 of which occurred exactly once all season. The most common result was 3–2, posted 38 times — 3.4% of the season's games. The season also produced 21 tie games, which sit on the board's diagonal.
Teams combined for 11.39 runs per game in 1891, 1.94 runs above the all-time average of 9.45. Shutouts accounted for 97 games (8.7% of the total), and 232 of the 1,088 decided games were settled by a single run (21.3%).
The highest-scoring game of the season came on June 17, 1891, when the WS9 beat the BL3 20–19 — 39 combined runs. The widest margin was 27 runs: the ML3 over the WS9 30–3 on September 10, 1891.
Four final scores appeared for the first time in major league history during 1891: 20–19, 21–16, 28–5, 30–3. Each one is a scorigami — a combination of winning and losing runs that no game had produced before.
This was the American Association's last season. It folded afterward, leaving the National League alone as a major league.
