The 1876 season produced 260 games between 8 clubs, running from April 22, 1876 to October 21, 1876. Those games ended in 106 different final scores, 48 of which occurred exactly once all season. The most common result was 3–0, posted 11 times — 4.2% of the season's games. The season also produced three tie games, which sit on the board's diagonal.

Teams combined for 11.79 runs per game in 1876, 2.34 runs above the all-time average of 9.45. Shutouts accounted for 47 games (18.1% of the total), and 38 of the 257 decided games were settled by a single run (14.8%).

The highest-scoring game of the season came on June 17, 1876, when the PHN beat the Cincinnati Red Stockings 23–15 — 38 combined runs. The widest margin was 25 runs: the Hartford Dark Blues over the NY3 28–3 on May 13, 1876.

Nine final scores appeared for the first time during 1876: 2–2, 16–11, 17–8, 19–3, 20–5, 21–5, 23–15, 28–3, 30–7. Almost every score was new in these years, because there was so little history for a result to be new against. The board filled itself faster in the 1870s than it could ever be filled again.

This was the National League's first season, founded to replace the National Association with a more stable eight-club circuit.
